Consumption in the Everyday
2016
A collection of checks using both printing and hand weaving techniques

Second-hand shops are a perfect visual example of the consumption surrounding us all today, an accumulation of just about everything, I am fascinated by our desire to extend the life of these objects, and the fact that we want to own an object that has already belonged to and shaped by someone else.

Cataloguing second-hand objects, I have defined four worlds: Mundane Utility, Unnecessary Over-decoration, Naivety, Hint and Nature. Everything has a place - but it is the juxtaposition of these worlds in a second-hand shop that I wish to express through textiles.

Checks seem the ideal woven translation of this concept - the word ‘juxtaposition’ literally means placing two of more contrasting things nexts to each other.
